Volunteering with CRAEC
The Cedar Riverside Adult Education Collaborative (CRAEC) offers English Language Learning (ELL) classes for adults at Pre-lit, beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels. Most students are from East Africa, primarily Somalia and Ethiopia, and reside in the Cedar Riverside neighborhood of Minneapolis.
Volunteers play a vital role in helping students improve their English skills to find employment, communicate with schools and teachers, and integrate effectively into the community. They support ELL teachers by assisting with lessons, tutoring students one-on-one or in small groups, and role-playing conversations. Volunteers provide additional classroom support, offering students a new voice, focused attention, and extra practice, which helps students progress more quickly in their English language acquisition.
Before starting, volunteers will participate in a comprehensive orientation. Orientation sessions are scheduled after applications are received. Volunteers will also benefit from ongoing support provided by the staff, volunteer coordinator, and ESL team.
